TIP OF THE DAY: Have you ever needed a friend; someone close to you with whom you can share absolutely everything? We all need that and it’s wonderful when you find it. It’s good to get things out. Talk to people; share a little bit of what you’re feeling. It has to be a person of trust. But generally, even getting one comment off the chest, and potentially some feedback as well, can be helpful, generate some conversation, and at the very least prompt a different line of thought. A lot of people with lupus spend time with counselors – it’s very beneficial to get those emotions out. Journaling is another way to do that, even if all that is written is one line once or twice a week. Encourage others to talk to you and see what comes out of that. Regan recently wrote an article about expressing one’s opinions and thoughts about lupus and the benefits of simply releasing those thoughts. You can read the article on the Lupus Foundation of Colorado website: http://www.lupuscolorado.org/images/may-june%202010%20newsletter.pdf. Please come back to www.beatlupus.com/todays-tip for a log of all tips of the day.

October is Lupus Awareness Month

Mission Statement: Regan Mizuno: “Basically, the motto of every person I know with lupus is, ‘We’re not wimps’. And it is said with a shake of the head and a knowing smile. It’s true. Lupus patients have a lot of challenges. And they rise to meet them. Because if they don’t, they sink. The goal of this site is to help find a cure for lupus through advocacy and music. There is a very strong movement by people with lupus to increase awareness and bring about change. Here’s my bit of it: I have been blessed in that I live a normal, healthy life, and have been given a prognosis of excellent health. Because of early diagnosis and lifestyle change, I fortunately reduced struggles associated with lupus and chemo treatments such as pain and fatigue. I regained my health and improved my quality of life and energy. My medical team is delighted by my progress and I wish everyone could be this lucky. My hope is that each person with lupus will forge their own path towards wellness. My story happened by chance. I want to share my story in hopes that it may help others find their own path. I don’t make any claims or promises. I simply want to share things that have worked for me. Common-sense approaches, including a low-sugar diet and simple exercises, have reformed my quality of life. I have developed a nutrition and fitness plan that has helped me increase my energy and decrease pain. There are established, referenced methods of reducing inflammation through diet and specific exercise that I include in the “Resources” tab. Mizuno Moves is an exercise method that is joint-friendly and muscle-friendly. I designed it using principals of mechanical engineering to make make exercise for people with pain and fatigue doable and fun. By virtue of moving, the long-term effects of exercise, including decreased inflammation in the body, kick in. It takes effort to be well. Lifting weights and being mindful of what we eat is not only beneficial, it is therapeutic, and a strong approach for longevity. We’re not wimps. People with lupus are strong and creative, and work through their challenges. I look up to those people and they inspire me every day. In my opinion, people with lupus can have their health. Here are the steps to take to do it. Together we can raise awareness for early, life-saving detection, and work as a group towards a common goal. Here are the latest advancements in methods of self-care and drug developments that we can utilize to achieve recovery.”

One goal of this organization is to raise $1,000.00 for the Lupus Foundation of Colorado (LFC): www.lupuscolorado.org, which provides funding for lupus research by working with the national organization, the Lupus Research Institute: http://www.lupusresearchinstitute.org/. You can help support our efforts through your purchase of the song that Regan wrote and performed, called “It’s My Time”. “It’s My Time” can be purchased here: http://beatlupus.com/singing, and can be heard on her myspace page at: www.myspace.com/ReganSings. Thank you for your support and caring.
